GODFATHER OF CRIME Version History
----------------------------------
Version 2.00 - Complete, and I mean complete, re-write of the game:
1. New spiffy, non-scrolling GUI.
2. On-line quick help/advice.
3. Now multi-node and on-line multi-player!
4. Several new crimes to commit.
5. Added a new business.
6. Better combat routines with a broader range of
options and reactions.
7. Players who become Bosses and/or the GodFather
now get a cut of subordinate players "action".
8. Players who become Bosses and/or the GodFather
now get new advantages AND player menu options.
9. Reduced number of crime territories from 4 to 2
in order to try to become GodFather.
10. Stats now range from 1 to 100 instead of 1 to 10.
11. Now allow storage for up to 20 messages per
player instead of the old 20 messages per GAME.
12. Consolidated the game setup files into ONE file
which initializes and sets up the game, and if
you are registered, allows you to configure
almost any option in the game.
13. Eliminated the separate maint.exe file. Now
maintenance will be performed when the first
player logs on each day.
14. A bounty can be set by Human bosses on any
player of their choice.
15. A human GodFather can now set enforcer rates
for each type of job they can do.
16. If you are related to someone by marriage you
CANNOT attack or harm them. This makes marriage
a REAL strategy now.
17. Eliminated the Recon routine from the Home Menu.
It just was not useful.
18. New combat options with thugs. You can now
attempt to talk with them and some might just
join you.
19. Corruption reactions have been redone. Now they
can say yes, no or they want to think about it.
20. Bribing an individual no longer means forever,
and there is a limit on how many at each level
you can bribe. Now it is possible that due to
firings, transfers, not being re-elected, the
individual you bribed might leave and you loose
that influence.
21. Introduced a new crimewave rule. If too many
crimes are conducted on a particular day then
the Mayor might declare a crimewave and the
police will crackdown on ALL the crime families.
22. Completely re-wrote the combat routines to take
account of reaction, morale and the possibility
that one side's soldiers/thugs might break and
run.
23. Human Bosses have more control over their Human
Underlings in their territory.
24. Registered users can now configure almost all
aspects of the game.
25. A new program just to setup the GOC.CTL
correctly is now included (DDSETUP.EXE).
26. No longer charges money for travelling around
New York with more then 5 thugs. Now there is
a temporary increase in your "DA Interest in
you" stat for each car load of soldiers who
goes with you beyond the first 5 soldiers. When
you get home this stat is returned to it's
previous value. A carload is defined as 6
people in the car.
27. More news is now published and more messages are
generated to inform players on what's going on
or has happened AND to help them out.
28. After a failed treachery attempt is made, the
player is now thrown out of the home he
committed the act in and the doors are
automatically locked to prevent him from
re-entering.
29. Human bosses must now get permission from the
GodFather to conduct a crime OR start a
business in the New York area.
30. Menu options now only show what a player can do
or afford to do on a particular day.
31. It is now much harder for lower level players
to harm or kill higher level players.
32. The old "cheesy" looking separate ansi menus
have been eliminated.
33. Many old, but aggrevating bugs have been
eliminated and the game has been cleaned up
to make it look much more professional.
34. The game is almost twice the size it was
before, so in order to reduce memory
requirements you will now find that over two
thirds of the game is now in an GOC.OVR file
which is loaded into memory only as needed.
35. Completely re-wrote the sysop.doc to make
setup and troubleshooting more easier and
helpful. Do yourself a favor: Read this
document!
Version 2.01 - The inevitable bug fix maintenance release to 2.0
1. Eliminated a screen clear problem with the
view stats while on street routine. Reported by
Dan Shore.
2. Eliminated the "EMS Error message" and beeping
from the overlay unit some were reporting as
being rather annoying. Reported by several
people.
3. Improved time slice releasing support to the
multi-taskers. Should act a little more "spry"
now when used with them and should not slow
down other programs using multi-taskers now.
4. Now using DDPlus version 7.0 with a few new
enhancements you will probably never notice or
see..
5. Record locking routines now have a loop for
those rare cases where two people try to access
the same record at the same time. Loop will
cycle 6-7 seconds or until the record is
successfully locked/unlocked. Was not a problem
in 2.0, but could have been, so I added the loop.
6. Cleaned up some spelling errors I missed
in 2.0.
7. Added a sentence in the Sysop.doc that explains
that inactive players are automatically deleted
after 10 days of game inactivity. Brought to my
attention by Louis Arseneau.
8. Changed it so that program will NOT load the
overlay into EMS unless you use the /E command
parameter. Without the use of the /E command it
will read from disk only now. Brought to my
attention by Louis Arseneau.
9. Players were not being saved correctly when
they were killed by other players and were
trapped in limbo unable to build a new home in
the game. Fixed. Identified by Kimberly Hopkins.
10. Fixed a problem with the visitors menu not
displaying when you entered another players home.
11. When you checked to see who else was visiting
in a home, it displayed "no one else is in the
game" which was incorrect. Has been fixed to
display "no one else is here" when no one else
is visiting.
12. Changed the overlay file structure to improve
performance and speed, the downside is that
the .exe file increased in size.
13. Provided a better batch file for single node
WildCat systems (See the Sample3.bat file)
14. Eliminated the constant repeat of the
"Checking Messages" player message. Will now
only happen once per day. Suggested by Ron Doty
and his game playing crew.
15. Forgot to include the HELP.TXT support file for
the DDSETUP.EXE program. Oops!
Version 2.02 - Minor bugfix and maintenance release:
1. Fixed a reported bug that occurred when a player
was killed off line. When his son took over the
player was unable to enter his home, IF the
door had been previously locked. Reported by
Steve Laboy
2. Made an adjustment so that the stats of an
heir are lowered to 1/2 of the normal starting
level instead of just 1 point in each which was
the previous case.
3. Added Digi-board support.
4. Added enhanced multi-tasker support. This should
help speed up the game when used under a
multi-tasker such as DesqView, OS/2, etc..
5. Added a new CTL format to support new options.
6. Added a new DDSETUP program to make the new
version of the CTL file.
7. Supports one new drop file format.
8. Added better fossil support for both BNU and XOO.
9. DOS SHARE is now a REQUIREMENT for both single
and multi-node use of the game. Not having it
present was the major reason for why moves
were going so slowly in some cases.
10. Some minor bug fixes for ansi support have been
implemented.
11. The bugrpt.frm, register.frm, sysop.doc,
catalog.txt and dsites.txt files have been
changed/updated.
12. After several requests I have changed the
program to eliminate non-players after 5 days
of inactivity.
13. I have made the daily maintenance a separate
program once again. Being part of the program
just slowed things down too much. This was an
experiment that FAILED. Live and learn I guess..
14. The marriage message from a friend will no
longer keep repeating.
15. I added an error logging routine to the setup
program.
16. Changed it so that you only approach the boss/
GodFather for approval to buy a business AFTER
the game has checked if you can afford that
business.
17. Changed it so that the Feds will NOT close down
a players Betting Parlor if he only has one
left. This leaves the player with at least one
business to generate revenue.
18. Fixed a problem with the recon routine which
was incorrectly subtracting a soldier from you
even if you succeeded in checking the area out.
19. Cleared up a message glitch which happened when
you failed to rob a bank. Reported by
Jim Eurich.
20. Some were getting negative attributes in the
DA Interest in you or Respect stats. I have
added a routine to the daily maintenance program
to fix this if it occurs. Reported by
Michele Hatcher.
21. Fixed some other minor glitches as well.
Version 2.03 - Minor bugfix and maintenance release:
1. Found a major bug in the new maint.exe program
which was NOT deleting inactive players and kept
new ones from entering the game. Big oops here!
Corrected.
2. I have added a map repair routine which will
check the map for errors and correct them.
3. I have added a repair routine which will check
for the presence of human bosses and repair any
problems it finds with this area.
4. I have added a repair routine which will check
status of all hostages held and repair any
problems it finds with this area.
5. Fixed a small problem with the news report of
people who were eliminated due to inactivity.
Version 2.04 - Minor bugfix and maintenance release:
1. Fixed a bug which kept text files such as the
newspaper and score files from pausing when
required.
2. Fixed a bug which was not updating non-playing
player data files when deployed troops were
killed. Reported by Mike Newbound.
3. Fixed a bug which was not properly placing the
authorities on the map or removing them.
4. Added a repair routine which will check for
map problems of the sort listed in 3 above and
fix them.
*5. After several requests I have decided to add
a command to the Home Menu and Map Movement
Menu to allow users to view the entire map
at one time.
*6. Fixed the FAMILY.ANS screen to show Night Clubs
which belong to the player. Was accidentally
left off in the last revision. Reported by Mike
Newbound.
7. In cases where maint.exe was run more than once
in a day OR players had missed a day of play
when a child was born the player was NOT able
to name the child. I have added code to the
program so that if any child is nameless the
player will get a chance to name it. Reported
by Mike Newbound.
8. In cases where the player committed suicide
the player was not killed off completely as he
should have been, if he had an heir. This has
been corrected. Reported by Mike Newbound.
9. In cases where the player committed suicide
the dead player was not removed from the map
as he should have been. This has been corrected.
Normal daily running of maint.exe will remove
any of these existing "ghosts". Reported by
Mike Newbound.
Version 2.10 - Major Bugfix and maintenance release:
*1. New key method used!! Registered users will
need to obtain a different key number from the
one they now have. See upgrade.doc for details
on how to get the key..
2. The delay has been removed from the unregistered
version of the game and you can now use the
setup program to set defaults even when
not registered :-)
3. Unregistered versions of the game will not
allow players to advance to the GodFather
rank :-(
4. Fixed a serious bug introduced in version 2.02
which caused the maint.exe program to crash
just before underboss promotions were made.
Net affect: No one was getting promoted and
data files were erased! Serious ouch here!!
Fixed. Reported by Mike Newbound.
5. Smoothed out some rough edges in the menu
system which should improve performance and
clear up some snags which occurred on occasion.
Reported by Mike Newbound.
6. Closed a loophole in the combat routines which
was allowing players moving on the map to win
against the Thugs every time as long as they
had no troops with them. Reported by Mike
Newbound.
*7. Added a new bulletin called MWANTED.DAT which
shows the FBI Top Ten Most Wanted List
ranked by the DA Interest Stat. Enjoy!
8. Adjusted the Kidnapping crime to be a little
easier to successfully accomplish.
9. Adjusted the Lieutenant routine so not quite
so many are attracted to a player at higher
levels as before.
10. Added a routine to the bosses menu that allows
visitors to marry the bosses daughter if the
boss is a human.
11. Modified the routine and menu choice in the
GodFathers menu so that when a human is the
GodFather, then the visitor will marry HIS
daughter instead of a fictious one.
*12. New Feature! There is a horse race betting
parlor the players can enter and gamble in.
This is almost a game within the game!
13. Changed the appearance of the newspapers and
score bulletins to make them look better.
Also changed the newpaper routine to report
thug and authorities deaths once per player
game day. This should make the newspaper
more mageable in size and more readable.
14. Fixed the heir bugs (hopefully).
*15. Added a routine which will now change the
home of the boss you take over to your color.
This will make it easier to see who's the
most powerful crime family at anyone time.
16. Changed the build home routine so that after
you build the home you immediately enter it.
Will save a few key strokes as a result...
17. Fixed a problem with the overlay unit which
kept it from loading into a second or more
windows in Windows 3.1. This fix has also
improved general performance.
18. Fine tuned the on map combat routines so
that many, if not most, of the incidents
where you got an empty message screen and
a pause have been eliminated.
19. Included the first issue of GodFather of
Crime Strategy tips which you can post as
a BBS bulletin.
Version 2.11 - Minor Bugfix and maintenance release:
1. Fixed a bug which allowed some users to get
unlimited tries at getting permission to build
businesses and commit crimes. Reported by
Richard Mitchell.
2. Increased the looping routines which opened
and read files in some instances.
3. Fixed a bug which kept you from entering your
own home because it was locked through someones
failed attempt at treachery. Reported by
Raymond Ramos and Richard Bergstrom.
4. Fixed a bug which allowed you to deploy negative
amounts of soldiers. Reported by Richard
Bergstom.
5. Added message to user to show that data files
are being updated at the end of the game and
to show that the game is NOT hung up.
Problem mainly experienced on older and slower
systems. Reported by several....
